Mistakes People make with treadmills.
Even if you love to jog outside a treadmill can be of use on days of bad weather.  Some people tend to shy from the treadmill because they think it will give them bad knees.  Todays treadmills have some bounce or give to the platform that makes it much better for you knees than jogging outside.  If your knees are in good shape then the treadmill is one of the best ways to keep your heart and lungs in shape, lose weight, and have some awesome looking legs and butt.  As a gym owner and personal trainer I would recommend to people with knee problems that they try something with less impact.  Elliptical trainers, or recumbent exercise bikes are a great way to get your cardio workout in if you have knee problems.  If you still prefer the treadmill even with knee problems then you can still get around this.  Select a lower speed that has you doing a walk or even a fast walk with out breaking into a jog.  You will find that speed walking is almost harder than jogging because it puts a whole different strain on different muscles. You will find the back of your legs and calf's will feel most of the strain from the exercise.  This is much better for your legs than jogging and will shape them better.  If it seems like you need more of a challenge than put the treadmill on an incline.  A fast walk with an incline will burn more calories, tone your legs better, and build strength into your legs better than jogging at the same pace.  The best benefit is it is still a lower impact than jogging.

What treadmill is best for me?
Let me give you some guides to consider before you make a purchase.  Yes you get what you pay for, but that does not mean you have to buy the most expensive one.  Who will be using it?  How much will it get used?  If you only plan on using it a few times a day, or month then a cheaper one will work fine and last a long time without problems or wear and tear.  Do you lke to sprint, run or just walk on the treadmill?  If you like to run then look at the motor size and speed that it is rated for.  If it is rated for only 10 miles an hour and has a 1.5 hp motor then you will be pushing it to its limits every time you get on it and it will be running hot.  This will shorten it's life span.  I would recommend you get one that will be rated for at least 12 mph and has a 2.5 hp motor or better.  This treadmill will not be pushed so hard and will last much longer.  Next how big is the biggest person that will be using it?  If you are a small person 170 or less, than a treadmill with a small motor and light frame, will do the job.  If you are above 200 pounds you will want a stronger frame say one that is certified for 350 pounds or better.  Remember as you are jogging every time you come down you are creating a force on the frame heavier than that of your weight.  As a bigger person you will want a motor at least 2.5 hp and consider the width of the track.  Last if you are 250 and up or even over 300 pounds then you should look at a treadmill that has a high strength frame.  Some are rated for up to 500 pounds.  Look at one that has a motor 3 hp or better and consider a wide track.  If the treadmill is going to get used a lot because you have several people in the household, then get the one built to take on a strong load.  If it comes with a good warranty then it will be a good machine.  If you have limited space then the fold up ones are very nice.  All the other stuff like display, speakers, ipod dock, cup holder, fan etc. should be considered second when you make your choice.
